Giving his all to cancer research

Mitacs Globalink Intern contributing to the development of a novel drug for cancer treatment

It is Luis Arvizu’s comprehensive prospective on scientific discovery that brings him to Queen’s University, where he is currently researching under Dr. Myron Szewczuk from the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences. Luis comes from Mexico’s Tec de Monterrey where he is pursuing his undergraduate degree in Engineering and Biotechnology.

Luis’ Globalink research project has him examining the novel use of a drug that inhibits the production and spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body, while making chemotherapy-resistant cells more susceptible to treatment.

“Participating in cancer research is highly motivating. Many of us have been affected in some way by this disease, which helps me stay focused on giving my all to this research project. My time in Canada is proving to be an invaluable experience. I am making connections, friendships and learning more and more every day.”

Luis looks forward to a career as a researcher, specifically in life sciences, where he can contribute to the scientific community and improve the quality of life of others facing disease and illness.
