Globalink Professor Profile: Dr. Yonghao Ni, University of New Brunswick

A multicultural team of researchers is advancing to the future with Globalink

With Mitacs taking care of all of the housing costs and stipends for the students, hosting the students is made easy. Dr. Ni has hosted three Mitacs Globalink students in previous years who were from India, who worked side-by-side his Mitacs-Accelerate interns and other graduate students. He is looking forward to accepting a fourth student this upcoming summer from Brazil.

Globalink Students under Dr. Ni’s guidance have the opportunity to work on many industry-focused projects in materials engineering and chemistry. He’s found the students to be hard working, and enjoys hosting them as part of a collaborative team with his graduate students. Furthermore, all three have been named in published papers as a result of their work.

The professor sees value in meeting new potential graduate students through Mitacs Globalink, and is already supervising the Master’s program of his 2011 intern, Ishneet Kaur, with help from the Globalink Graduate Fellowship. Ishneet is busy completing research to convert biomass into bio chemicals/ materials, a challenge which she began during her initial Globalink internship.

Overall, the program has contributed to strong research every summer and Dr. Ni is pleased that it has contributed to the expansion of his team. “While the Globalink students get a good overseas experience, we benefit from their talent in research. Mitacs Globalink has provided good students who are a nice addition to any research program.”
