Mitacs Globalink Research intern working on a head-mounted display at the University of Waterloo
Working under the supervision of Professor Shi Cao in the Department of Systems Design Engineering, Shefali is using her computer science background to help develop an innovative face recognition app for Google Glass — a type of “wearable technology” — like glasses with an optical head-mounted display.
Hailing from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, in Pilani, India, Shefali says she is thrilled to take part in research involving Google Glass, calling her project an “amazing opportunity to have hands-on experience with today’s technology.”
The Google Glass app Shefali is developing will help a user recognize a person’s face. The app will record their image and let the user know who the person is, their name, and the date of when they first met.
Outside of her research space at U of W, Shefali’s been busy knocking a few items off her bucket list, including skydiving over Niagara Falls at 10,000 feet.
Shefali says she’s created fond memories of her time in Canada from both a research and personal level: “My Globalink internship has been an amazing experience and one that I’ll remember forever. It has given me the opportunity to have access to amazing research. More importantly, it’s opened by eyes to the possibility of pursuing my Master’s in Canada. I can’t wait to come back.”
