Globalink Research Intern Johnny dos Santos is working with top research leader from the University of Ottawa
After hearing about the Globalink Research Internship, he jumped at the chance to work with Dr. Elizabeth Fitzpatrick at the University of Ottawa’s School of Rehabilitation Sciences.
I learned about Globalink and saw that one project was supervised by Dr. Fitzpatrick. I was already familiar with her research and wanted the chance to work with her. She’s a leader in the area of early diagnosis of children with hearing loss, and it’s amazing to work with one of the top people in my field.”
Johnny’s project explores why some children with hearing loss continue to receive late diagnoses after the implementation of newborn hearing screening. By examining the possible reasons for late diagnosis, he and his research team hope to provide useful information about screening and evaluation of these children.
In addition to researching at the university, he’s getting valuable clinical experience in the audiology department at Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. He says “I don’t have words to describe the great work they do. The experience has been really awesome.”
Since he arrived in Ottawa, Johnny has enjoyed the diversity that the city offers. His project team members and his fellow Globalink Research Interns are from all over the world, so he’s learning about many different cultures. He’s also learning about the unpredictability of Ottawa’s climate. “The weather is always changing here,” Johnny explains, “And this place is amazing because I’m improving my English while I’m surrounded by kind and helpful people.”
Johnny is particularly grateful for the Globalink experience: “I want to thank Mitacs, CAPES, my professors in Brazil, and especially Dr. Fitzpatrick, my host professor, for helping me have this important experience.”
