Research dreams take flight

Globalink intern develops a specialized drone for search and rescue operations

Working as part of the Autonomous Reconfigurable/Robotic Systems Group at the Schulich School of Engineering, Adyasha is helping to further develop a special highly maneuverable, high-speed drone bi-copter capable to fly in confined spaces and other areas such as collapsed buildings typically encountered in urban search and rescue, or mining environments.  Devices like this, which have been under development at the U of C since 2005, could be deployed during disasters to direct rescuers to find stranded survivors.

Outside the lab, she and her fellow Globalink research interns look forward to meeting with local industry leaders and taking professional development workshops over the summer through Mitacs Step.

Her experience so far has been invaluable: “Since coming to the University of Calgary, I have been impressed by the very sophisticated lab spaces and the whole research program. I’ve already fallen in love with Alberta so much that I want to apply to grad schools so that I can come back!”
