Postdoctoral fellow hired by partner company after developing new methodology for product design
His joint industry-academia Mitacs Elevate research project with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Inc, a leading global semiconductor design innovator, and the University of Toronto proved to be a winning experience.
Aydin developed a novel methodology to predict thermal transport in AMD’s high-end electronic devices – giving the company a competitive edge in product development and time to market – by studying how heat transfers in various electronic systems. Upon completion of his fellowship, he was hired on as a full-time employee at AMD Markham.
For Aydin, the two-year Mitacs Elevate PDF program was the perfect combination of research and industry experience. “My Elevate fellowship allowed me to closely interact with AMD, understand their needs and current challenges, and demonstrate the capabilities that exist on the university side to address those issues. More importantly, it provided me the opportunity to develop my expertise and showcase them to the company.”
According to manager Jabir Yusufali, hiring Aydin was an “easy decision” for the company. “Aydin topped the list [of candidates] because of his relevant experience with AMD, his excellent communication skills, his technical skills and his top notch educational background. As an employee today, I could not be happier with Aydin.”
Having spent the previous 14 years in academia, Aydin had little experience in the corporate world; however, the customized business training he received during his Elevate fellowship made the transition from academia to corporate world a smooth one. “Elevate is a one-of-a-kind program. Not only does it support scientific research, but personal and professional development is emphasized. Attending business and entrepreneurship workshops and seminars throughout my fellowship allowed me to see beyond the technical realm and grow my network, tenfold. It truly has been a unique and rewarding experience.”
