Enhancing the reliability and efficiency of MLOPs tools in industrial settings

Thales is a global technology leader investing in digital and “deep tech” innovations – Big Data, artificial intelligence, connectivity, cybersecurity and quantum technology – to build a future we can all trust. This internship is part of the Trustworthy & Efficient AI stream described in Umbrella Part 2: focusing on enhancing safety robustness, understanding, and security of deep learning models for critical and autonomous systems. Current MLOps technologies are often general, therefore not fitting the specific needs of Thales; or proprietary which is unsuitable for some of the sensitive technologies at Thales. This project aims to target issues surrounding the automatic evaluation of annotation techniques, automating the selection of ML models optimized for resource-constrained environments and the modularization of MLOps pipelines. Thales collaborates closely with Canadian public safety organizations such as the Canadian Space Agency, Defense Research and Development Canada, etc. for making any advancements achieved by Thales a direct benefit to Canada. Not only do these collaborations enhance Thales’s capabilities, but they also contribute significantly to the advancement of Canadian interests. The success of this project not only benefits Thales but also strengthens Canada’s position at the forefront of innovation and technological development in crucial domains.

Detecting and Explaining Outlier Customer Behaviors in Cohorts

This project aims to help Numr Inc. better understand when and why customers behave in unexpected ways—like suddenly leaving a service or becoming dissatisfied—even when they seem similar to happy or loyal customers. The intern will build a prototype tool that groups similar customers together and then finds the ones acting differently in terms of key business outcomes, such as churn or satisfaction. By spotting and explaining these “outliers,” the tool will allow Numr and its clients to act earlier—fixing issues before customers leave. This will help businesses improve customer experience, increase loyalty, and reduce revenue loss.

Allowing Athletes to view Trended Data in the mobile App – Dylan Froh

SkillShark Software is a SaaS model company leading the industry in making youth athlete evaluations easy. Current
sport organizations do evaluations on pen and paper and spend countless hours re-entering the data onto a
spreadsheet and are even then unable to provide report cards to athletes and parents. SkillShark has signed
contracts with the largest youth sport orgs in the world (USSSA) as well as MLB
This project involves making data viewable to our athletes being evaluated by the organizations. Currently organizations can send out individual report cards to athletes for a single event. This project will enable the athletes to see trended data from multiple events within the SkillShark mobile app.

Improved tools for monitoring primitive human blood development – Year two

STEMCELL Technologies is a rapidly growing Vancouver-based Canadian biotech company with more than 500
employees and annual sales of more than $80M worldwide primarily serving the burgeoning stem cell field. Blood
stem cells were one of the first type of stem cell to be identified and have been used clinically for many
transplantation applications for almost 50 years. Nevertheless, new ways of assessing specific subpopulations and
their responses to various drugs and genetic alteration are needed by clinical, basic science and pharmaceutical
investigators. Dr. Nakamichi, an MD PhD, under the joint supervision of Dr. Jiang in the Terry Fox Laboratory of the BC Cancer Agency and Dr. Szilvassy at STEMCELL will develop and validate new reagents for assessing the growth of
normal and leukemic human blood cell precursors in culture and after transplantation into mice that lack an immune
system to enable reliable use of these approaches by non-specialists.

Personal Support Worker Microsimulation Modelling

This project will develop Canada’s nationwide, open-source simulation model to predict both supply and demand for Personal Support Workers (PSWs), addressing a critical workforce shortage as Canada’s older adult population grows rapidly. Health Workforce Canada will create innovative modelling tools that allow healthcare decision-makers to test different policy scenarios and make evidence-based planning decisions for this essential but unregulated profession. By combining advanced statistical analysis with data from Statistics Canada and input from stakeholders across the country, this model will help ensure adequate care for Canada’s aging population and could later be adapted for other allied health professions lacking centralized workforce planning tools. This project will bridge technical innovation with practical policy applications to strengthen healthcare workforce planning nationwide.

Combler l’écart : Utilisation des données du monde réel (DMR) en affaires réglementaires pour l’amélioration des connaissances sur la sécurité des médicaments au Canada.

L’utilisation des données du monde réel (DMR) est un phénomène s’imposant désormais de manière grandissante dans la décision des agences réglementaires. En effet, les données sur l’efficacité, l’innocuité et l’utilisation de médicaments dans un contexte réel de soins de santé permettent d’offrir une meilleure vue d’ensemble aux agences pour une approbation (de surcroit, une accessibilité) plus rapide à de nouveaux traitements efficaces et sécuritaires. Les grandes agences gouvernementales telles que la FDA et l’EMA ont récemment publié des lignes directrices afin de guider les compagnies pharmaceutiques dans leur développement clinique. Les DMR permettent ainsi d’appuyer les données traditionnelles issues des études cliniques lors de la soumission de dossier réglementaire pour une approbation et un accès au marché plus rapide et efficace. Les DMR permettent de sauver des coûts énormes aux entreprises pour catalyser ces dépenses dans l’investissement de nouvelles thérapies. Santé Canada a également suivi ses homologues américain et européen en se lançant dans le projet pour soutenir les compagnies locales et les filiales dans leur soumission. Comme il y a peu de données harmonisées au Canada à ce sujet, mon projet sera de combler cet écart pour améliorer les connaissances sur la sécurité des médicaments au Canada.

Convergence réglementaire: développement d’un outil de coordination pour soumission pan-americaines.

La préparation d’un dossier d’homologation pour un nouveau produit pharmaceutique est un processus complexe et rigoureux. Chaque pays possède ses propres exigences réglementaires, ce qui rend l’évaluation des requis et la constitution du dossier particulièrement délicates. Lorsque ce même dossier doit être soumis dans plusieurs pays de la région panaméricaine, la complexité augmente encore. Les différences entre les régulations nationales peuvent entraîner des variations significatives dans les documents requis, les tests à effectuer, et les délais de traitement. Cette diversité réglementaire nécessite une compréhension approfondie des spécificités de chaque agence pour garantir une soumission réussie et efficace. De ce fait, ce projet de recherche vise à analyser et évaluer les exigences réglementaires nécessaires pour l’approbation de nouveaux médicaments dans divers pays de la région panaméricaine, tels que le Canada, le Brésil, le Mexique et la Colombie. L’objectif est de développer un outil innovant pour faciliter la préparation des dossiers d’homologation et accélérer leur soumission dans ces pays, contribuant ainsi à une mise en marché plus rapide et efficace des nouveaux médicaments.

Prediction and management of the long-term environmental risk of mine waste rock piles via 5G-enabled instrumentation and monitoring (2)

Mining activities generate large quantities of waste rock after valuable metals are extracted. Upon exposure to air and water, a diverse range of metals and metalloids are released and mobilized to the surrounding environment. There is an urgent need to manage the environmental risk posed by mine waste rock piles given the scale of the problem. A major bottleneck is the lack of data on waste rock pile properties. The main objective of this research is to understand how to best use 5G-enabled wireless sensor networks to monitor key characteristics of mine waste rock piles, and to use machine learning to predict drainage quantity and quality. Ultimately, this research aims to establish an industry-standard framework for risk assessment and management of mine waste rock pollution using 5G-enabled instrumentation and monitoring.

Portraits socio-démographiques et développement social des territoires de la Mauricie et Centre-du-Québec

Ce projet vise à soutenir l’organisme à but non lucratif, Centraide (régions centre-ouest du Québec), dans la réalisation de sa mission : donner à chacun les moyens d’améliorer les conditions de vie des gens et de bâtir des communautés inclusives pour lutter contre la pauvreté et l’exclusion. Par un travail d’analyse des données provenant d’enquêtes provinciales, ce projet permettra de construire les portraits socio-démographiques des régions administratives de la Mauricie et du Centre-du-Québec et de leurs territoires respectifs. Ce travail mènera à l’identification de besoins spécifiques à chaque région et deviendra un moteur clé pour Centraide dans le développement et la mise en oeuvre d’initiatives qui répondent aux préoccupations et aux enjeux vécus par les communautés.

Exploring the Influence of Race on the Coach-Athlete Relationship to Inform Mentorship Practices

This project, in partnership with the Ahead of the Game Youth Mentoring Organization (AOTG), investigates how race influences the coach-athlete relationship, particularly in the context of sport-based youth mentorship for under-resourced Black youth in rural Nova Scotia. AOTG has been facilitating such programs for over a decade and has found that relevant and relatable coaches and mentors are required to ”meet participants where they are at” to provide them with a quality developmental experience. Drawing on critical race theory and Jowett’s 3+1C model of coaching, this study explores interpersonal dynamics between coaches and Black youth athletes to enhance AOTG’s mentor recruitment, onboarding, and training practices. The research consists of two phases: first, varsity coaches at St. Francis Xavier University will wear body cameras during practices, followed by stimulated recall interviews to analyze coaching behaviors and decisions. In the second phase, focus groups with Black youth athletes will examine their perceptions of coaching relationships. The intern will assist in ethics submissions, recruitment, data collection and analysis, and knowledge mobilization. The insights gained aim to inform more culturally responsive and effective mentor-mentee relationships in youth sport programs.
