Swine feed efficiency improvement and meat quality co-selection using genome wide technologies

Improving feed efficiency (FE) and meat quality (MQ) are Canadian swine industry priorities that will increase sustainability and competitiveness. It is difficult to improve these traits simultaneously by traditional breeding methods due to limited knowledge of genetic interactions, limitations on animals that can be measured and the high cost of measurement. High throughput genomic technology has the potential to positively impact these issues. Our overall purpose is to develop a genomic assisted breeding program to simultaneously improve FE and MQ.

Poultry health surveillance in Alberta for prevention of emerging infectious disease.

The broad objectives of this project are:

 

I. To reduce the risk of emerging infectious diseases related to poultry; and

II. To improve Alberta poultry industry productivity and profitability

 

To reach these broad objectives we will address 3 specific objectives:

Determine what the knowledge needs of the poultry industry are and how knowledge is best disseminated to improve disease prevention in poultry flocks and preparedness and response to disease outbreaks.

In cattle, energy requirements after parturition increase exponentially, primarily, due to increase in milk production. Negative energy balance hampers reproductive efficiency, inflicting heavy economic losses to dairy industry. Poor reproduction is the most important cause of culling dairy cows. Feed supplementation with vitamins improves energy balance. Also, observations in humans indicate that folic acid and vitamin B12 improve oocyte quality and pregnancy establishment.

Alteration of plant cell wall structure for improvement ofbiomass hydrolysis

Biobased products, mostly derived from plant biomass, have the potential to improve the sustainability of Canada’s natural resources and environmental quality while competing economically. Plant biomass, composed primarily of cell walls and modification of cell wall properties has the potential to improve biomass conversion to biobased products such as biofuels. Progress towards achieving this goal is currently impeded by a lack of knowledge of how cell walls are assembled and how their structure affects the processing of biomass.

Cette période représente en effet un risque élevée pour la transmission de maladies infectieuses à cause du stress qu’elle engendre et à cause de l'immaturité du système immunitaire au cours des premières semaines de vie. Les cas de diarrhées peuvent rapidement prendre des proportions épidémiques et avoir des conséquences dramatiques à l’échelle du troupeau.

Identification des profils de réussite chez les entrepreneurs agricoles de la Mauricie

Cette recherche permettra à la Fédération de l'Union des Producteurs Agricoles de la Mauricie (FUPAM) de connaître les différentes compétences et habiletés requises chez les entrepreneurs agricoles afin d'assurer leur succès en affaires. Pour y parvenir, nous identifierons des entreprises agricoles qui connaissent du succès ainsi que d’autres dont la performance est plus mitigée. Ces entreprises seront comparées au sein des trois (3) grands secteurs identifiés : production de masse, production de niche et production règlementée.

Land Use Mapping and Planning for Sustainable Development with Island Lake First Nations and other East-side Communities in Manitoba

Participatory community development research alongside Garden Hill First Nation (FN), Wasagamack FN and other East-side FN community members is the focus of this Mitacs research. Student interns will assist in recording each community’s traditional land use through maps, videos, interviews, development of plans and branding. A geographical information system will allow an analysis of different natural resources and land uses. This research will build capacity in the community to plan and implement sustainable development in the East-side communities considering cultural priorities.

AMH, predictive tool of ovarian response to a superovulation treatment in the cow

In dairy cows, future generations are created by embryo transfer techniques, which entail a superovulation treatment followed by fertilization in the field or in the laboratory. Due to enormous pressure exerted by breeders, cows are now superovulated very young, even before puberty and thereafter are superovulated routinely. Despite improvements in this technique, there is still variability in the ovarian response to treatment and loss of ovarian response after the 5th or 6th superovulation treatment.

Etude de la vulnérabilité au stress hydrique de jeunes plants d’arbres. Cas d’espèces indigènes au Québec

Dans un contexte de changements climatiques, les modèles prévoient une augmentation de la fréquence et de l’intensité des sécheresses estivales. Or le manque d’eau peut gravement affecter la croissance et la survie des arbres, et donc diminuer leur productivité. L’objectif de cette étude est de tester la capacité de résistance de jeunes arbres à un stress hydrique tel qu’une sécheresse estivale.
