Modeling the Removal of Mine-impacted Water Species Using Freezing Technologies Focused on Frazil Ice Formation

The development of environment-friendly freezing technologies to contaminated water is a potential solution for water treatment in regions with cold weather conditions and vulnerable to anthropogenic impact. The results of laboratory tests fulfilled by Core Geoscience Services Inc. on the removal of mine-impacted water species through ice formation along with other publicly available data will form a basis for the next stage of research comprising quantitative analysis and mathematical modelling.

Identifying and validating rational combinatorial therapies for treatment-refractory Glioblastoma

Glioblastoma (GBM), the most common and deadly form of primary brain cancer in adults. After diagnosis, GBM patients undergo standard therapy, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Unfortunately, disease relapse is inevitable and patients face a median survival of less than 15 months. A small population of tumor cells, known as brain tumor initiating cells (BTICs), have been shown to resist standard therapy and lead to relapse. Using a multi-pronged approach, we are developing novel and rational combinatorial therapies against treatment-resistant GBM BTICs.

Developing surfactant–nanoparticle systems for enhanced oil recovery

There has been a growing interest in the application of nanotechnology for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Nanoparticles possess unique physical and chemical properties due to their small size. In addition, their surface coating can be easily tailored for a particular EOR application. The proposed research will develop surfactant-coated nanoparticles as an additive. These nanoparticles will increase the recovery of residual oil in unconventional reservoirs found in Saskatchewan. Silica nanoparticles will be coated with zwitterionic surfactants.

Liquid biopsy for the discovery of new methods of cancer diagnosis and new treatment strategies

Development of a human immortalized FSHD cell line to study the epigenetic targeting of DUX4 to treat FSHD

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a debilitating disease resulting from the loss of skeletal muscles mainly in the face, shoulder blades and upper arms. FSHD results from expression of the protein DUX4
which causes skeletal muscle cell death and therefore loss of muscles. This project aims to immortalize isolated skeletal muscle cells from patients with FSHD and produce long-lived cells that can be used to screen
pharmaceutical compounds for their ability to inhibit the expression of DUX4 and therefore treat FSHD.

Characterizing the sources of methane, CO2, and hydrogen sulphide presence during thermal oil recovery operations

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contribute to a global warming trend associated with climate change. Methane is a potent GHG with a global warming potential 25 times that of Carbon Dioxide over a 100-year period. Gas migration /Surface casing vent flows from subsurface to surface is a well-known issue; however, characterizing the source zone(s) for stray gases from production, injection, and observation wells is an ongoing challenge in the oil/gas industry.

Integrated post-harvest wash systems for fruit and vegetable decontamination for reducing water usage and decrease emission of disinfectant byproducts in wastewater streams

The Canadian Food Guide has recommended an increase in fresh produce in the daily diet. Although the nutritional benefits of fresh produce are well established there are continuing food safety issues, high wastage and water consumption. To enhance safety and shelf-life it is common practice to pass produce through a post-harvest wash using chlorine as sanitizer. Chlorine is reactive and forms disinfection byproducts from constituents released from produce during washing. The byproducts are considered environmental pollutants but also has low antimicrobial activity.
