The Pathfinder Career System is a sophisticated psychological assessment tool that provides a high-definition portrait of an individual’s behavioural profile that focuses on the key attributes required for success in a specific job position. The purpose of this project is for Optimum Talent inc., a Human Resources Consulting firm, to be in a position to make optimal use of the test, by determining how it can be integrated into the current services offered by the firm and by pushing the tool further to respond to very specific client demands.
The notion of ‘self-regulation’ in the development of children and young people and the health of adults has taken on considerable importance, especially in education, as the science investigating this feature has made significant advances over the last decade. One nationwide initiative, the Canadian Self-Regulation Initiative (CSRI), has been working since 2012 to support educators’ understanding about self-regulation and their ability to integrate these ideas into their practice.
Major depression (MDD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder. The aim of this project is to examine the link between specific molecular alterations and neuropathology in the brain in patients with MDD. We will use post-mortem brains that were collected by the Sao Paulo autopsy service. More specifically, oxidative modifications to proteins and lipids, and levels of neurotrophins, which are necessary for the survival of neurons and glial cells, will be measured and correlated with markers of neurodegeneration.
Spring Loaded Technology is a Halifax, Nova Scotia based start-up company focused on developing innovative knee bracing technology. Their Levitation™ knee brace has been developed to assist knee extension in people with leg weakness, but it has not yet been tested. The proposed research project will test the Levitation™ knee brace in healthy people, providing feedback to the Spring Loaded regarding the efficacy of their knee brace. Participants will be tested with and without the brace to compare its effects on knee extension torque and muscle activity.
We live in an age of distraction and mind-wandering, which has been broadly linked to greater levels of unhappiness, suggesting that many of us might benefit from mindfulness training that allows us to better control our attention. Interaxon Inc. has developed a potentially breakthrough solution to this problem in a device that measures brain activity to facilitate mindfulness attentional training at home. However, there still remain major barriers toward the popularization of this new technology.
Teams in crisis management operate in uncertainty and time pressure conditions, which severely constrain team performance. Systems capable of detecting critical levels of cognitive functioning could help teams to adapt better to the situation they face by allowing an intelligent re-allocation of tasks across agents. Traditionally, adaptive systems are based on the operator behavioral response (such as performance).
We would like to investigate the use of hearing aids in real life environments. Retrospective questionnaires are often subject to memory errors and recall biases. In order to obtain more accurate momentary evaluations of sound and noise, our proposed research involves asking participants to complete real-time evaluations in the laboratory and in their everyday environments. The momentary assessments will be recorded using a mobile evaluation tool.
