Development and Assessment of Modalities for Adult Science Engagement at Science World

Scientific literacy and life-long scientific education is becoming increasingly important for everyday life in our society. One of the mediums through which the public can find accessible information on science and technology advancements is their local science centre such as Science World. Science World would like to increase their adult-oriented content by 2020 and support me in assessing which modalities are most effective at educating, engaging and entertaining adult audiences.

Optimization of wood bison interspecific somatic cell nuclear transfer and embryo culture for species conservation

Interspecies somatic cell nuclear transfer (iSCNT) is a promising technique whereby a bison donor cell is transplanted into a domestic cattle oocyte. Different fibroblast donor cells have been demonstrated to have different embryonic outcomes. Problems with SCNT embryos have been also reported after in vitro culture. Toronto Zoo’s efforts have focused on wood bison iSCNT, a threatened Canadian species, in order to conserve its germplasm.

Dispersal in bromeliad macroivertebrate communities

Dispersal, or the movement of individuals, is very important in order to maintain natural populations. However, dispersal is often difficult to study. New technological developments now allow us to infer dispersal from genetic data. We will use naturally occurring communities of insects that live in small pools of water in order to study how dispersal allows communities of several species to coexist together. In order to do this we must collect insects from these pools of water (that are present in some plants), to then sequence parts of their genomes.

BC seafood companies and their industry association partners are strongly interested in growing domestic markets for seafood and promoting their locally caught and raised seafood products, which fit well with a number of current North American food trends including local food, a growing focus on diets promoting healthy lifestyles and an increasingly older adult demographic with an interest in consuming high quality, nutrient rich, and often health promoting and disease preventing foods, like seafood.

The effects of stress during white sturgeon early life history on larval physiology, development and olfactory sensitivity

Elevated levels of stress hormones (i.e. cortisol) provide a potential mechanism by which substrate condition affects larval development and survival in the endangered white sturgeon. The possibility that stress hormones mediate larval response to substrate conditions will be investigated by artificially elevating cortisol levels and identifying effects on larval physiology. Cortisol levels of wild caught adult fish will also be investigated to determine the effects of capture and handling on spawning success and larval quality.
