Hearing loss affects over 1/2 of Canadians over 65 years of age. Remarkably, however, hearing aid adoption rates have remained stable and very low (20-25%) over the past 25 years. This is particularly surprising given the significant, concomitant advancements in hearing aid technologies within the same timeframe. In attempting to identify the causes of dissatisfaction with current hearing aid devices, hearing aid companies are now beginning to appreciate that the effects of hearing loss may extend beyond communication deficits to other critical aspects of quality of life, such as mobility.

Managing shared state for video games in a networked multi-core environment II

Video Games require a vast array of different computations to present the desired experience. These computations must be completed consistently to make the software responsive to the user. The industry trend towards many separate processors (multi-core) in the same physical device and the mergence of network based ‘cloud’ computing have created many opportunities, but also many challenges for the game industry.

Interactive image segmentation for the diyorama mobile engine

Hololabs Studio Inc. is developing a mobile platform called Diyorama, which enables users to arrange images into interactive 3-D scenes with an aesthetic similar to paper craft and collage art. Users can include image from their photo libraries, social networks, or image search results in order to create customized playable scenes from existing content. The research project adds the ability to interactively extract foreground objects from unwanted background imagery in order to provide useful assets for building one’s scene.
