Helping businesses take a green turn

KDC is a manufacturer of personal care products with facilities in Ontario, Quebec and the USA. The company connected with Kathryn Battista, Mitacs Accelerate intern and graduate student in Master's in Environment & Sustainability at Western University, for a research project aimed at enhancing KDC’s environmental practices under the supervision of Professor Ian Colquhoun from the Department of Anthropology.

“Kathryn’s internship focused specifically on designing and implementing boundaries around our waste management,” says Sonya D'Cunha, Director of Sustainability at KDC.

USask students harvest experience for Farm At Hand mobile app

Agriculture and farming in the 21st century is an increasingly complex operation that requires sound organization and planning, from seed inventories to tractor parts and harvest planning, among other tasks for the farmer. Farm At Hand, a start-up mobile application company, was built to help farmers address the complex needs of their operations “from seed to sale.”

Postcard from Brazil: UBC student brings laser experiment to Rio de Janeiro

I knew I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity but I was still scared.  When I arrived in Rio de Janeiro, I had no idea what to expect. It was my first trip to South America, I didn’t speak any Portuguese, and I only knew my Brazilian supervisor, whom I’d met once before.

After I landed, I was greeted at the airport and taken to UFRJ and then to my apartment in Santa Teresa, an old neighbourhood on a hill. Once I looked out my window and saw the view of the bay and Sugarloaf Mountain, I realized just where I was. It was amazing.

Stepping towards a dream job

“Certainly searching for a job is much more than sending resumes and waiting for an interview. The business skills I’ve learned through Mitacs Step have provided me with valuable communication and networking abilities, the know-how to create impactful resumes and business cards, as well as appropriate manners and etiquette during an interview or at a industry event, all of which I’ve applied to my present job hunt.”

Helping children find their way

Studying Mechatronics Engineering at the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico, Adrian has been posted at the University of Calgary for the summer.

There, in the Department of Psychology, Adrian is doing research under Professor Giuseppe Iaria helping to develop a computer game to diagnose children with developmental topographical disorientation (DTD), which is an inability to navigate the world around them.

Professor Profile: Professor Bozena Kaminska – SFU

Originally from Poland, Dr. Kaminska moved to Canada in 1986 and held a professor position at Polytechnique de Montréal for fourteen years, before heading to the United States with her start-up company OPMAXX.  After the company’s acquisition, she returned to Canada and was awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair. She has been based at School of Engineering Science at Simon Fraser University since 2005.

Dr. Kaminska found Mitacs Accelerate as the perfect fit to advance her own research and apply it in an industrial setting.

Mitacs-Accelerate Professor Profile: Dr. Jon Rokne – University of Calgary

Originally from Norway, he moved to Canada 1964 and completed a Masters of Science and a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Calgary, before joining the Department of Computer Science at the university as a professor.

Kick-starting a career in Southern Ontario through Mitacs Enterprise

After finishing a diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology from Sheridan College, Gurpreet was keen to put his skills and education to use. However, with limited job experience, landing a full-time position proved difficult. After learning about Mitacs Enterprise, Gurpreet partnered with Mississauga-based Avnan Electro, a global supplier of electrical components. The six-month internship was instrumental in providing him with the industry connections and experience he was looking for.
