This project will lay a foundation for Interior Savings Credit Union to better serve their membership by providing them with the means to discover significant membership groups within their large and complex database. This will be done through a combination of developing novel statistical techniques to discover the groups and writing the computer code needed to enact those techniques. We expect the project to benefit Interior Savings and its members by enhancing the credit union’s ability to target growth opportunities.
Now, a team of Mitacs researchers is working to understand the risks involved with aerial firefighting and is developing customized wearable and in-flight technologies that could improve pilot safety during wildfire seasons. Their goal: develop a system to monitor a pilot’s physical and cognitive conditions using the latest in wearable technologies to empower the pilot and flight operations to only deploy when it’s safe to fly.
To estimate the market value of a real estate, a computer software program can produce the result by analyzing the location, market conditions, and other characteristics relevant to it. This is known as the 'automated valuation model (AVM)'. The previous Mitacs Accelerate project with 'Data Nerds' has conducted a series of experiments with the attributes of real estates and geographic dependencies. This project is to further develop the AVM by incorporating temporal factors. The deep learning based approaches will be employed in this project.
Despite the benefits associated with staying physically active and eating a healthy diet, men are less likely than women to engage in these behaviours. Healthy lifestyle programs that are offered in collaboration with professional sport teams have been found to engage men in being more active and eating healthier. HAT TRICK was designed to specifically target men and is being offered with major junior ice hockey teams in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL).
To research, design, and develop a network communication and control modules that integrate any residential HAVC control system with a utility energy management user interface. Developed signal modulation scheme will be implemented on development testing board. Device will network with all utilities for gas, water, and electricity.
Traditional fleet management systems suffer from zone-based aggregation. i.e. they use aggregate zone-level road and terrain characteristics to estimate trip performance indicators. In addition, most of these systems require intermediate ad-hoc staging tables to generate trip performance reports. To address these limitations, this research aims at developing a segment-based fleet management system for near real-time analysis. The proposed approach uses static segmentation to associate road and terrain characteristics with each segment of the road network.
Hummingbird Drones provides aerial fire monitoring services to the BC Wildfire Service through the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). They conduct night-time flights over wildfire zones to locate and map hotspots for ground crews. Their current operations suffer from two bottlenecks: a heavy camera stabilizer which decreases flight time, and long post-processing time after landing required to analyze captured thermal images.
Professional development (PD) refers to an individual’s growth throughout a professional life cycle. Generally, the intent of PD is to deepen understanding and improve practice within a standardized professional life cycle. Given the personalized nature of PD, program evaluations are frequently based on participants’ satisfaction rather than evidence of professional learning or change in practice. At the same time, online programs provide more convenient and flexible PD opportunities without geographical barriers.
The intern will conduct a research study to evaluate whether measuring insulin in saliva can be used to reflect levels of insulin in the blood. The long-term objective is to work with the industry partner to develop a non-invasive personal salivary insulin monitor using a new technology that is in development that can quickly and cost-effectively measure insulin. The intern will work closely with the partner organization to understand the new technology and the end goals of the project while translating the research study results to help develop a prototype.
