Improving efficiency and safety in aviation industry using big data analytics (phase II)

Aviation industry uses flight data recorders (FDR) to monitor a high number of parameters during each flight it operates. It is expected that analyzing this data will provide useful information to airlines for improving flight safety and efficiency. However, this analysis is a challenging task in itself because the amount of accumulated data is enormous and also because it is diverse. To overcome these difficulties, data is first preprocessed (or cleaned) and only significant parameters are kept.

Recovery of high purity scandium oxide from titanium processing residues

Scandium (Sc) is a rare, but strategic element for many high-tech applications such as next generation fuel cell technologies. Typically, it is required as highly pure (99.99%) Sc2O3. Currently, the global supply of Sc2O3 is very small and concentrated in a few countries. There is currently no production know-how available in Canada. The principal source of Sc extraction is as a by-product of metallurgical processes, e.g., titanium ore processing. The project investigates the extraction of high purity scandium from titanium pigment industry residues.

Analysis of ore texture and relation to processing performance

The project consists in devising a method to quantitatively describe textural features of ores; these features may include mineral composition, grain size and shape, spatial distribution, etc. Equally important is relating these features to the performance observed when processing the ores. The foreseen deliverable is a tool to predict ore processing performance. The scale of investigation is set at the rock and drill core size such that the performance prediction can be issued as early as possible in the ore dressing process.

Strategic Decision Making in Adversarial Planning applied for Used Water Management

This research proposal is in the field of decision making under uncertainty. More specifically, we focus upon improving decision making in adversarial, stochastic and/or partially observable situations. In any situation where there is more than one agent that can impact its current state, or any variable that is outside the control of the agent, we are in the presence of adversarial planning. Failing to recognize the impact of other agents on a situation leads to suboptimal solution.

Education, Community Engagement and Unconventional Oil and Gas Development: North East British Columbia

Through directed interviews and exit questionnaires information about baseline education levels associated with academic preparedness and skills training will be analyzed to determine what type of support is lacking in the Natural Gas development. The interviews will take place throughout the Monteny Region of NE British Columbia region to assist with Liquid Natural Gas development.

Rehabilitation of Concrete Pipes Using Honeycomb-FRP Composite Sandwich Infinite Pipe

The deterioration of our aging underground pipe network emerges as a critical problem. Concrete pipes may be damaged due to salt attack from outside and sulfide attack from inside, hence compromising its structural integrity. Repairs for such pipes are time-consuming and expensive. A revolutionary trenchless structural rehabilitation technique is introduced. In this technique Innovative honeycomb-FRP Composite Sandwich (HCS) are used for retrofitting concrete pipes (InfinitPipe™).

Perfectionnement des outils et pratiques de modélisation hydrologique pour l’évaluation des impacts des changements climatiques sur les régimes hydriques québécois

Les variations anticipées du climat pourraient venir perturber substantiellement le régime hydrique québécois, appelant les acteurs locaux de l’eau à redéfinir leurs modes de gestion ainsi qu’à mettre en place des stratégies d’adaptation. Les travaux engagés dans ce sens, initiés dans le début des années 2000 par Hydro-Québec, s’appuient dorénavant sur une collaboration (cQ2 : Hydro-Québec, CEHQ, Rio Tinto Alcan, Ouranos) visant à diffuser un message complet et cohérent quant au diagnostic des impacts sur les régimes hydriques en s’appuyant sur des bases scientifiques solides.

Hydrometallurgical Production of Niobium and Tantalum Oxide

A hydrometallurgical process for the production of niobium and tantalum oxide from a primary mineral resource and by product of a tin smelting slag is proposed. This process comprises dissolution of the concentrate and slag with the mixture of acids, following by purification and precipitation process. XPS do not have any background in hydrometallurgical recovery of niobium and tantalum and therefore this will provide an important foundation for future work by XPS in this field.

Le type d’aménagement peut affecter les indicateurs de performance des entreprises manufacturières. Pour choisir le meilleur type, une ou plusieurs règles sont utilisées selon le contexte de l’étude. Une règle très connue pour les entreprises manufacturières; ‘Il faut mettre les deux machines ayant le flux le plus élevé à proximité’. Une autre règle utile pour un entrepôt est : ‘il faut stocker le produit qui roule plus à côté du quai de chargement’. En plus, les chercheurs ont proposé plusieurs modèles pour les problèmes d’aménagement.
