Vancouver, BC – Mitacs Inc., a national, not-for-profit organization that designs and delivers unique research and training programs, announced its year-end highlights today for the year ending, April 1, 2013–March 31, 2014.
Program highlights
- 2,240 Mitacs Accelerate internships, including a three-year, multi-university project, between the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Carleton University and 1QB Information Technologies
- 3,600 Mitacs Accelerate internship submissions
- 94 Mitacs Elevate Fellowships
- 298 professional skills workshops, more than 6,000 seats, delivered through Mitacs Step
- The launch of two-way international mobility research internships through Mitacs Globalink
- 481 Globalink Research Internship placements at 37 universities across Canada
- 19 Globalink Graduate Fellowships awarded to former Globalink Research Interns for graduate studies at a university in Canada
- 70 Globalink Graduate Fellowship submissions
- 6 Globalink Research Awards awarded to senior undergraduate and graduate students for research at a university outside Canada
- 28 Globalink Research Award submissions
Partnership and government highlights
- Mitacs and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SHHRC) formed a unique partnership to create stronger connections between Canadian companies and social sciences and humanities graduate students
- Mitacs partnered with four new countries to deliver Mitacs Globalink research opportunities: France (Sorbonne Universités), Saudi Arabia ,Turkey and Vietnam
- Saskatchewan’s International Minerals Innovation Institute (IMII), Mitacs, and the University of Saskatchewan partnered on a distinctive research and training initiative through an investment valued at more than $600,000. The Mitacs Industry Executive in Residence–Minerals (MIER–Minerals) will identify and create new research initiatives that will lead to innovation in the minerals sector
- 10 signed partnership agreements: Three industry partners, two partner organizations, one research organization, and four academic programs: University of Toronto, Master of Applied Computing and Master of Forestry; Queen’s University, Master of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Simon Fraser University, Centre for Sustainable Community Development (CSCD)
- Mitacs received ongoing funding support from the Government of Canada, and the governments of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador through its Research and Development Corporation, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec through Le Fonds de recherche du Québec and le Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur, Recherche, Science et Technologie, and Saskatchewan.
Other achievements
- Launch of Mitacs Converge, a pilot initiative that aims to grow Canadian small to medium enterprises by connecting them with Canadian researchers and multi-national sponsor companies.
- The Mitacs Accelerate Longitudinal Survey revealed the impact of Mitacs Accelerate on former interns
- More than 85% of interns indicated significant improvement in their critical and creative thinking, competence in research development and design, knowledge of the discipline and ability to address private sector problems
- Mitacs and CAPS partnered on the largest survey ever of Canadian postdocs, identifying key issues in postdoc administration and training
