Mitacs Awards call for nominations opens

Awards recognize importance of research and development in driving Canadian innovation

Vancouver, BC — Today, Mitacs opens the call for nominations for the 10th annual Mitacs Awards. These prestigious awards honour and recognize outstanding students, fellows, and professors who have participated in Mitacs programs.

Previous winners have been recognized for outstanding contributions that solve important challenges with research solutions, including conducting research to stop the spread of cancer, improving technology for brain injury assessment, and developing technology that transforms carbon dioxide into fuel.

Award recipients will be announced at an awards ceremony on November 24 in Ottawa. Should an in-person event not be possible due to COVID-19, a digital awards ceremony will take place.

Nominations for the 2020 awards are now open for the following categories:

Mitacs & NRC–IRAP Award for Commercialization*

Given to an intern for an idea brought from research that is now available on the market or soon to be commercialized.

Alejandro Adem Legacy Award for Outstanding Innovation — Indigenous*

Presented to an Indigenous student or postdoctoral fellow who has made a significant achievement in research and development during their Mitacs-funded work. Priority will be given to someone who has made a significant achievement in Indigenous innovation.

Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — International

Given to a student or postdoctoral fellow who has made a significant achievement in research and development innovation through international collaboration during their Mitacs-funded Globalink or Accelerate International research.

Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — Master’s

Presented to a master’s student who has made a significant achievement in research and development during their Mitacs-funded work.

Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — PhD

Awarded to a PhD student who has made a significant achievement in research and development during their Mitacs-funded work.

Mitacs Award for Outstanding Innovation — Postdoctoral*

Presented to a postdoctoral fellow who has made a significant achievement in research and development during their Mitacs-funded work.

Mitacs Award for Exceptional Leadership — Professor*

Awarded to an academic supervisor with an exemplary record of developing collaborations with industry and other partners; providing valuable research and training experiences to their Mitacs-funded interns; and initiating research projects with significant outcomes through their Mitacs funding.

*These award categories are open to nominations for both college, polytechnic, and university participants from eligible programs.
