Poor diet is one of the factors associated with obesity and overweight, which may increase the risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Two ways to improve the diets at the population level are to 1) establish public health initiatives (e.g. product labelling or advertising restrictions and 2) change the portion sizes available to the consumer.
Nutrient profiling (NP) models can establish the âhealthinessâ of foods by ranking them according to their nutrient content and can be used to establish public health initiatives, such as helping consumers in food-selection decisions at the supermarket (e.g. labelling), setting standards for food in schools or cafeterias and provide an incentive for manufacturers to produce products lower in salt or sugar.
