Exploring the Impacts of a Community-Based Post-Secondary Education Award

Canadian community foundations significantly support post-secondary institutions and students in their provision of merit and needs based awards and bursaries. Yet little is known about the impacts of these investments for students. The Edmonton Community Foundation has partnered with UAlberta (Community Service-Learning) and the Edmonton Social Planning Council (ESPC) to explore the impacts of a specific ECF Awards program for low-income and civically engaged students. Beginning with the 2018 group of award winners, the study will track these students as they enter higher education, take their courses and engage in other socially minded and career oriented activities, and transition into various forms of employment. Researchers will connect with the participants using interviews, surveys and focus groups, at four points of time across 2019-2025: during their studies, upon graduation or withdrawal, at six months after graduation and at two years after graduation. The study will compare the characteristics of those students who won awards to those who did not, and also visually map the journeys of participant students from home to school to post-secondary institution to employment sites.

Predicting the Fair Market Value of a Real Estate Asset

Finding the right real estate property that grows in value over the next few years is of paramount importance. For doing so, one of the most important factors is to estimate the current value of the property as well as its future value. The goal of this project is to build a data and domain-driven model using machine learning that uses previous real estate data to estimate the value of property and suggest the right property in the right neighborhood for investment. We will build an end-to-end framework to collect and preprocess the data and then predict the value of a property.

Two-Stage Anaerobic Digestion of Source-Separated Organics and Municipal Sludges to Produce Renewable Bioenergy

A significant fraction of wet organic waste streams within typical municipalities include food wastes (collected by many as source separated organics), and sludges or biosolids. In Canada, such wastes are mostly going to landfill or being land applied to recover some nutrient value. Anaerobic digestion (AD) for disposal of organic waste is an attractive option to recover renewable bioenergy (as methane or hydrogen), with additional environmental benefits from preventing such wastes from going to the landfill. However, time needed to recover bioenergy conventional AD technology is large, which increases capital costs, making it uneconomical for most municipalities to recover this bioenergy. Greenfield has developed a high-rate AD (GHRAD) technology expected to reduce the time needed, and thus improve the economics of bioenergy recovery. This project will help improve and optimize the recovery of bioenergy from municipal source separated organics and municipal sludges using GHRAD technology, established at pilot-scale by Greenfield.

Two case studies in the public history of international development policies in Canada: the Lebanese Special Measures Program (1975-1990) and The Life of Lewis Perinbam (1925-2008)

This project will involve the research of international development assistance policy in Canada. It will focus on two case studies: Lebanese Special Measures Program and the life of distinguished Canadian humanitarian Lewis Perinbam. This research would contribute to a better understanding of the history of international development assistance in Canada. The partners in this project are not-for-profit organizations focused on promoting education and community development. By partnering with MITACS Accelerate, we will be able to fund high level research that explores how Canada’s international development assistance operates in practice. The ultimate goal is to promote a better understanding of this history to the public.

Controlling the Recoil of .50 Calibre Sniper Rifle

A novel approach is taken to reduce vibration through the design of a passive smart device with the use of magnetic actuators. In the proposed device, magnets are arranged in a particular alignment, so as to attenuate the resulting vibrations from the explosion at the moment of firing. The device has shown to be effective while maintaining a low mass (expected to be approximately ~150 grams), which is a relatively lightweight device for the desired purpose.

Developing, Implementing, and Evaluating internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Anxiety and Depression

Public health struggles to meet the needs of adults with mental health concerns in a timely manner. Given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the decreased ability to provide face-to-face therapy and the anticipated increase in mental health difficulties as a result of the pandemic, alternatives need to be made available for Canadians seeking support. This project will evaluate a new internet-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (iCBT) platform, Tranquility Online, within the context of a global pandemic. Tranquility Online uses iCBT, with the option of an online coach, to help adults manage and treat mild to moderate symptoms of anxiety and depression. A program evaluation will use surveys to assess the effectiveness of having a coach, and examine mental health outcomes using questionnaires. The plan is to share these results through the company website, meetings within the public health sector, and social marketing.

New molecular representation, molecular generation, and data mining strategies for thedesign of SARS-CoV-2 therapies

The goal of the project is to facilitate the research and development of new drugs using machine learning. More specifically, exploring new techniques to model molecules and how they can be represented. Doing so will involve training deep learning models on multiple small datasets with the objective of improving the generalization performance on new tasks. The trained models will have to be accurate even in the context of new types of molecules. With the small amount of data available, out-of-distribution techniques will be used. Molecules are dynamic 3D structures but are currently not represented as such. New machine learning models will be created in order to capture the dynamic aspects of molecules. If successful, this will improve the performance of many tasks that requires molecular information.
