Cartographie des zones à risque de glissements pelliculaires dans le parc national de la Jacques-Cartier

Le parc national de la Jacques-Cartier, sous la responsabilité de la Sépaq, subit de façon continue des glissements pelliculaires, un type de glissement de terrain, menaçant les infrastructures et les sentiers pédestres. Afin d’assurer la sécurité des randonneurs et des investissements en infrastructures prévus, il est nécessaire d’identifier les zones à risque de glissement. Ce projet propose d’identifier et de cartographier ces zones. Un logiciel SIG sera utilisé pour réaliser des analyses spatiales et multicritères (pente, type de sol, drainage, végétation, géologie) afin d’identifier, de localiser et de cartographier les zones à risques de glissements pelliculaires et l’étendue des zones qui pourraient être impactées par un glissement. Les cartes qui seront produites permettront à la Sépaq d’accroître la sécurité des randonneurs, de mieux planifier la construction de nouvelles infrastructures et par conséquent, de réduire les dommages (et les coûts) liés aux glissements pelliculaires.

Feasibility Study of Switch Module Redesign

Structural and vibration analysis is performed on a proposed design change on electronic assembly to ensure that it meets customer requirements and is a more cost-effective design. Such design change should be cost efficient. The important aspect, in addition to the design, is interacting with different engineers at different positions in the company. Working with mechanical engineers and suppliers in achieving such targets and ensuring the work done is viable and on track. Furthermore, creating a technical report at the end that outlines the process taken, the results obtained and whether the new design is satisfactory, cost wise and structurally.

System Controller – Connector/Harness/Baseplate Redesign Feasibility Study

Electronic assemblies are used to control various systems in an aircraft. Under normal operating conditions, these assemblies undergo vibration, and therefore have an expected life span. Different designs are analyzed to reduce production cost, and these designs have to ensure that the electronic components contained within the hardware can tolerate the same operating conditions without failure. End-of-line Testing for Safety and Quality with Machine Learning

Safety-critical systems are pervasive throughout our society with everyday objects such as airplanes, cars, trains, or medical devices. The requested functionality and expectations from these systems are growing rapidly and consequently, they become more complex. The complexity is usually handled by breaking the system into manageable smaller components and parts. Factories then integrate these parts into the final product. However, while some complexity can be managed
by this divide & conquer strategy, the assembly is still a challenging task. End-of-line testing provides the quality assurance to ensure that no defective product leaves the factory.
In this project, the research team and Acerta develop new learning-based algorithms to assist in end-of-line testing to detect defective product before it leaves the factory. A sequence of interns concentrate on developing classification technology, refining prediction mechanisms, and improving the analytics infrastructure.

Development of plant-based beverage with high content and quality proteins.

Plant-based beverages are inappropriate alternatives to bovine milk, due to lower protein content and not sufficient amount of essential amino acids. To produce nutritionally complete plant-based beverage with high overall acceptability, the technological interventions and fortification techniques need to be developed. Oat is one of the promising raw material for preparation of functional plant-based milk due to the presence of dietary fibres and good nutritional quality of oat proteins. Appropriate complementation of oat proteins with other high nutritious plant protein isolate will enable to produce plant-based beverage with all essential amino acids required for a complete source of protein in a single serving. The applied interventions may lead to process improvements for better quality and performance of plant based beverages and further growth and global competitiveness of Canadian products in a global market.

La réalité virtuelle : une façon novatrice de favoriser l’apprentissage socio-émotionnel chez les adolescents

Le présent projet vise à mettre sur pied un outil d’intervention utilisant la réalité virtuelle afin de favoriser le développement de saines habiletés sociales et affectives chez les adolescents. En collaboration avec la Fondation Jasmin Roy, le stagiaire sera ainsi appelé à participer à la création de scénarios sociaux qui seront projetés par le biais de la réalité virtuelle aux adolescents dans leur milieu scolaire, à l’élaboration d’un guide permettant aux enseignants de diriger la réflexion en lien avec ces projections ainsi qu’à l’évaluation de l’efficacité de l’outil d’intervention. Ce projet permettra à la Fondation Jasmin Roy de poursuivre son intervention visant à stimuler les saines habiletés socio-émotionnelles tout en documentant l’utilisation émergente de la réalité virtuelle en milieu éducatif.

Modèle de prévision d’actes frauduleux en entreprise

Les scandales financiers (HealthSouth et Enron WorldCom) survenus depuis les 20 dernières années ont ébranlé la confiance des investisseurs envers le système. En effet, les fraudes financières en entreprise ont un impact dévastateur sur les entreprises qui en sont victimes et sur leurs actionnaires, qui peuvent encaisser des pertes énormes. Ce type d’événement peut engendrer une perte d’environ 22% en moyenne de la valeur totale de l’entreprise prise en défaut pour ses investisseurs, selon la recherche de Dyck, Morse et Zingales (2013). Notre étude vise à repérer à l’avance les cas d’événements frauduleux. Globalement, notre étude bonifiera ou confirmera les éléments de la grille d’analyse de prévention de la fraude développée par la Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec lors d’évaluation de risques de corruption chez les entreprises ciblées par les investissements.

Étude du comportement mécanique d’une cornière en carton

Des cornières en carton sont utilisées pour la protection des angles de colis ou de palettes, pendant leurs manutentions (chargement, transport, etc.). Elles jouent un rôle important dans le renforcement de la résistance à l’empilement des cartons. Abzac Canada Inc. (division cornière) est une entreprise installée à Trois-Rivières depuis 2004. Afin de réduire son empreinte environnementale, Abzac Canada Inc., a introduit une nouvelle gamme de cornières “MULTIFOLD” réduisant dans la foulée leurs poids et la quantité du papier utiliser dans leurs confections. Malgré leurs performances, les propriétés mécaniques des cornières ne sont pas mesurées et les essais déterminés en usine nécessitent une analyse plus rigoureuse et systématique. 2012 Technology Industry Labour Study

The project is about analyzing the Technology Industry in British Columbia. The study helps predict the British Columbia (BC) technology labour market through quantitative and qualitative analysis of answered questionnaires from technology companies in BC. A report summarizing the findings will be submitted to Cindy Pearson, COO of BCTIA by the end of December. In January, BCTIA will share the report with all technology companies in the BC region. This study will benefit BCTIA by helping the association fosters the continued growth of the Technology Industry in British Columbia through programs, communications, lobbying, and any other needed services.

Improving the knowledge on the integrity of welded joints of hydraulic turbine runners via a better estimation of the probability of occurrence (POO) and the probability of detection (POD)

Due to the importance of energy production cost, it is critical to reduce unnecessary or unpredicted halts of power generation equipment. Hydro-Québec as a major power generation company uses models to estimate the service life of turbine runners to avoid the aforementioned halts. For these models, possessing several input parameters, to be accurate, the inputs should be defined with less uncertainty. The characteristics of flaws in the runners are one of the most influential inputs. Since nondestructive testing (NDT) methods are used to characterize these flaws, so it is important that these methods are reliable. This project sheds light on the characteristics of common flaws in the runner joints and also on the reliability of NDT methods used to characterize such flaws. By increasing the accuracy of life estimations, Hydro-Québec will be able to minimize the amount of halts and hence to reduce the power generation costs.

Mental health issues affect a large percentage of the military population. The HERE4U Military Version will be an instant messaging smartphone application to connect military family members (adults only) who are dealing with mental health problems to a mental health counseling solution that uses the IBM Watson cognitive platform. Being able to engage with Watson in a secure, private and anonymous manner will encourage military personnel to reach out for help where they might not have in the past to obtain timely advice. Watson will engage with the client to identify a presenting problem and when clinically serious, triage to a counselor for guidance and referral.
